I have had my first DNF (did not finish) of the year. Sadly, it's for a book club I'm doing with some friends from work. Mayhem by Sarah Pinborough has an awesome cover and an intriguing synopsis.
Unfortunately, it takes two chapters to actually start the book. Chapter one is all italics and chapter two was newspaper articles. The first person narrative just added to the sense that this was not a book for me.
Also, the lead character is a police surgeon who is an insomniac with anxiety problems. I'm pretty sure this is the basis of at least three-fourths of the current spate of detective/pathologist/forensic anthropologist series out there. Life's too short to read something I'm going to roll my eyes at every five pages.
I finally finished Under the March Sun by Charles Fountain. This was for the PopSugar 2017 challenge for "A book with a month or day of the week in the title." The early history of spring training-how and why training came to be was very interesting. Early days as teams moved around and the challenge for African American players in the south during the late 40's onward was very interesting. By the end of the book, I was really over business deals, moves, and trying to keep everything straight!
However, if you're a huge baseball fan, I would recommend this one.
Up next in my reading list is to finish reading The Highway Kind and I'm going to delve into the second Tearling book. I have to admit this is one of my favorite times of the year. I turn on the TV to my ball game and pick up my current read.
Where are you reading these days?
